How can it be that our 25th high school reunion is upon us? Just over a year ago, a letter was sent to the known
addresses of CHS 1979 classmates. That letter evoked memories of Mary Walsh Kraft dancing the night away at our 20th
reunion. That feat by itself is not exceptional, (or unexpected if you know Mary) unless you consider the fact that
she was almost 8 months pregnant at the time! While these images are soothing, last year’s letter had a serious
intent. After experiencing inexplicable pain in her back, Mary was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in April
2003. Despite the seriousness of her diagnosis, Mary remained positive that she could defeat this illness. Several
friends in the Cohasset area decided to hold a fundraiser to support Mary’s incredible will to live, as well as help
defray her enormous medical bills.
The event was held on Tuesday, July 15, 2003, a beautiful summer day that featured bright sunlight and a refreshing breeze.
It was the kind of New England day that Mary thrived on when she lived in Cohasset. As the sun set over the North River
that night, approximately 100 people gathered at Mackenzie’s restaurant (Scituate) to support Mary and her family.
To say that the evening was awe inspiring does not do it justice. The people who attended were not only family members
and close friends, but were also 1979 classmates, casual acquaintances and even complete strangers. Heartfelt messages
of hope and love were conveyed through video, prayer flags and written word. In addition, a significant amount of money
was raised. On behalf of Mary and her family, thank you to anyone who participated in any way. The displays of
kindness that were demonstrated during the planning and execution of this event truly define humanity.
However, it is with incredible sadness we inform you that despite staging a valiant fight, Mary succumbed to her illness
just eleven days later. Mary left behind her beloved husband Dean (CHS class of 1978) and two young sons Colin (4) and
Tyler (2). Mary never cared about material wealth. Her family and friends were clearly the focus of her life.
It is incomprehensible to imagine what her family is enduring. Mary and Dean’s relationship truly defined the
term “soulmates”. And words can not convey the love Mary had for her boys. How tragic that this incredible
woman will not be able to share life’s trials and tribulations with them.
Some of you may have vivid memories of Mary dating back to when we were just children ourselves. For those of us
that did maintain a relationship with Mary, we anticipated her and Dean’s visits to Cohasset like a child anticipates
a visit to Disney World. Despite the fact they lived many miles away from Cohasset, they had the ability to bring people
together. It was always as if time had stood still. People were attracted to Mary because she always made you
laugh and she was one of those rare people that always made you feel good about yourself.
While the heartbreak of Mary’s passing will remain indefinitely, we are all better people for having known her…
